9. Be nice, nice, nice to your competition. Smile and chat it up with competing salespeople when you meet them at chamber or hospitality association meetings. If they show up unannounced for a site tour, no problem! Never under any circumstances disparage a fellow hotelier or their hotel to an-y-one. Ever.
Why? Because your efforts to be nice and play it cool give them one more reason to shake in their boots. (The other reason of which is not the least that you are an awesome salesperson.)
Now listen. Being nice doesn't mean that you have to let your gums flap and tell them every little thing about your business success, but do be amiable and accommodating. The French call it "savoir faire." I call it likeability.
(p.s. As a side note, if you are interviewing with another hotel for a job, do not under any circumstances speak negatively about your current hotel or its staff. Keep the discussion you and your aspirations for growth, why you would make a good fit at the new job, etc. I have passed on candidates for breaking this rule more times than I can count.)
