Sweet Sixteen: 16 Years in Hospitality - #7 of 16

7.  Looks do matter.

I've denied this for about 30 years of my life, but I've come to the subtle assumption that, yes, looks play a factor in more than you think, and I would be remiss if I didn't mention this.  Whether you think me to be shallow or not, suffice it to say, some people are very sensitive to appearances and these people are your your future bosses.

Do you really think your boss doesn't notice when you come in with bleary, red eyes or no make up?  Come on now.  We do notice, and so do your customers.  Also, it shouldn't matter, but size matters too.  If you don't take care of yourself, in the way that you look, dress, groom, smell*, or your ability what you eat and drink in order maintain a healthy lifestyle, how would a boss or hiring manager reasonably expect to have 100% confidence in your ability to take more care of your customers than you do of yourself?

So shave up, soap up, and shape up.  Don't be the salesperson who was only memorable because you have four-inch long eyebrow hairs or smelled like sauteed onions.

(* Ah, yes.  Some of the more distasteful and embarrassing conversations I have ever had as a manager revolved around olfactory topics.  If you must be odoriferous, please try for "pleasant" not "pungent.")
